Pisa Orders New Mosquito Treatment After Another Dengue Case

Pisa's mayor has issued another disinfection order following the confirmation of a new dengue case in the city, according to PisaToday. The order mandates targeted mosquito control measures in the affected area to prevent further spread of the virus.

The latest patient is a man who recently returned to Italy from India and has been hospitalized, RaiNews reports. This marks another imported case of the mosquito-borne illness in the Pisa region, prompting the local emergency response.

The new case has intensified a political dispute over how dengue outbreaks are being managed. Pisa's mayor, Michele Conti, has criticized the regional government's approach, accusing it of what la Repubblica describes as "one-eyed environmentalism" for not doing enough on prevention, according to the newspaper.

The criticism comes as local officials argue that reactive disinfection orders are not enough. La Nazione reports that a local politician, identified as Del Rosso, is calling for a more proactive prevention strategy that addresses mosquito populations before an emergency occurs, rather than responding after a case is confirmed.

The issue is not isolated to Pisa. ANSA reports that two additional dengue cases have been confirmed in nearby Prato, where authorities have also launched a cleanup operation to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which are common in parts of Italy during warmer months. While most cases are mild, the virus can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in rare instances, lead to serious complications.

What to watch next: Whether the regional government responds to the mayor's criticism and shifts toward year-round mosquito control programs, rather than relying on emergency disinfection orders after each new case is detected.
